Greek postal customs - beware.

A good buyer of mine in Greece has just had a refund for a large order due to Greek customs returning his items without informing him customs duty was liable.

Instead they examined the package - covered it in official tape - and just returned it. As the postage was expensive it was not worthwhile to take a chance and return it - so the order and subsequent ones was lost. Another one of our useless Prime Minister's sunny uplands benefits of Brexit.

This was the first - no doubt of many - orders on Delcampe to be hit this way. On the other site I have had now six similar returns from EU countries where my customers have refused to pay the import duties levied on their orders.

It is looking increasingly that orders over a certain amount going outside the UK will no longer be economical if it becomes widespread unless customers are prepared to pay these fees..

Very strange.....maybe living in Philippines.outside EU and Brexit stupidities has some advantage. No problems yet with Customs in either EU or UK ,,,,,yet.

Greece even helpful in forwarding a package to Cyprus last week because direct post to Cyprus is closed over here for COVID related reasons

Maybe it is because there are no Customs declarations ever affixed to letters here and even registered mail from Philippines is assumed to be of no value\ :

Now that there is electronic customs documentation all they need to do is scan the barcode and then a fully itemised fees to pay sticker will probably be printed.

That over a certain amount is now EUR0.01. There is no de minimis amount allowed into the EU now.

I've always had a disclaimer on my listings for international sales "Import duties, taxes and charges are not included in the item price or P&P charges. These charges are the buyer's responsibility."

On the bright side, customers on the other site are being forced to pay the VAT upfront on orders less than EUR150, so this should stop items getting stopped at the border if the whole IOSS thing works ok.

That system is on here, but is optional at present. I'm expecting a lot more complaints where the buyer has opted out of paying up front. If so I hope that its made compulsory.

Just to clarify - the package had all the relevant customs documentation and declarations attached.

It looks like I got an anti-England (maybe anti UK) customs official.

My buyer did indicate this sort of behaviour takes place also with German goods as there is a lot of bad feeling towards that country due to the economic bailout and the hardship that ensued due to the conditions imposed from Berlin.
