    Depends on the stamp.

Some coil stamps are numbered on the reverse. Others have numbers on the back for security purposes. Private companies that used large quantities of postage sometimes backstamped to prevent theft (most private perfinned stamps were punctured for this reason.

Some stamp expertisers backstamped stamps - though usually with a name rather than a number.

Any chance of a scan so we can have a look at exactly what you have?

    Well, not really simple!

I don't have much knowledge of Dutch postal history, but this looks like an inspector's mark to me - an internal PO check that the correct postage rate was used, unless of course anyone knows different. I would put it up on the Dutch forum and see if you can get a fuller response there.

Happy to be of some help.

The UK inspector's stamps are generally numbers only and do not have a 'frame' around them. They are fairly common, particularly on postcards to foreign destinations, as many people only paid the internal postcard postage rate, hence foreign postcards are often a good source of postage dues as they were more subject to checking..

    Greetings from the Netherlands. :applause:

This postmark is from the postman and very common in that period.

The number is his personal number and the letter E stands for the fifth delivery round. In Amsterdam you can find f.e. the letters A > I

Hope this helps to solve your little problem.
