Seller taking money and disappearing - my fault?

    A longtime seller (member here since 2010) has had his account suspended yesterday. Apparently he took money from several buyers and then disappeared. I had a plan to open dispute - not that it would help.
    You see I had plan to pay with PayPal or credit card but after making a purchase it turned out I had reached some sort of limit on my card and had to pay by bank transfer. After giving me his account details he visited Delcampe for two weeks but did not reply any of my messages and did not provide registered shippment code.
    I've been already told elsewhere that "It's your own fault". Partially this might be so as paying someone you do not know through bank is taking a risk. 60 euros for schooling money.

    I wonder thought by this logic how any business got done worldwide BEFORE PayPal or before credit cards got widely available.
    Even now plenty of older philatelists in EU only take bank transfer as payment.

    My point is - he was seller here for 12 years.
    Perhaps it's more common now as more people are on the edge with two years of pandemic etc?

    You illustrate why it is worthwhile paying using a payment system where you can get your money back when things go wrong in a transaction.

    Unfortunately more of these situations are going to happen because of the severe squeeze on income due to increases in cost of living costs where people who are managing on the border line find they can no longer cope.

    Previous to Paypal and the like it was common to receive payment by cash sent Registered or ordinary mail and get payments made by cheque.
    I remember having stacks of US $1 notes and may other pre-Euro currencies which had been sent as payment for items. Of course cheques sometimes were not honoured due to lack of funds - but all such losses are or were part of business. One simply tries to keep such losses to a minimum but one will never get rid of them entirely.
