    Hello,

I've recently bought a letter from Quebec to Chelsea, sent post paid in Sept 1848 by a soldier. This letter bears, besides the Quebec post paid marks (dated 4 & 5 sept, 1848), a tombstone red mark dated Sept 26 (see pic).

I'd welcome more info on this particular mark. I'd particularly appreciate to know whether the letter on top of the mark (in this case O) allows to identify where it was struck (harbour of entry in England, or final destination?). Is the red colour the normal one for these marks? When were they put into use and until when, etc... References to any pertinent literature on the topic would be much appreciated as well.

Furthermore, if anyone has the documentation allowing to identify aboard which ship this letter crossed the Atlantic a century and a half ago, I'd be most interested as well.

    Many thanks
    Sincerely
    Didier
