Clothing Heritage – Notranjska (Polhov Gradec area)
The stamp depicts a scene painted by Ljubljana painter Franz Kurz zum Thurn und Goldenstein around 1838. It is part of a series of the artist’s interpretations of the clothing of the rural population in Slovenia, which were painted at the instigation of Polish exile and ethnographer Emil Korytek. This image of a man, preserved in an album which is kept at the Slovene Ethnographic Museum as part of Korytek’s legacy, was published together with the image of a woman in the form which we see on the stamp in the December 1844 issue of the Ljubljana magazine Carniola. The pair present one of the formal manners of dress of the rural population on colder days in the vicinity of Polhov Gradec, Dobrova and Vrhnika in the first half of the 19th century. The man is wearing high boots, breeches made of black chamois, a white shirt over which he wears a red cloth waistcoat with a gold chain and closely sewn round metal buttons; over the waistcoat he wears a smart jacket of dark blue cloth decorated with tin buttons, on top of which he wears a cloth coat called a plajš of the type made in Gorenjska. His neck is adorned with a silk scarf, and on his head he wears a round fur cap made of dormouse skins, which were hunted and worked into furs particularly in Notranjska. The woman wears a skirt which is sewn onto her corset and whose hem is decorated with a silk ribbon, while the skirt is made of mezlan – a cloth made of linen and wool. Her apron is made of brushed linen canvas. Beneath her corset she wears a blouse, and she is protected against the cold by a coat made of white sheepskin called a kožuh. She is wearing boots, and a traditional headdress called a peča.
