Daniel Spoerri naît en mars 1930 à Galati en Roumanie. En 1942, son père est exécuté par les Nazi. La famille se réfugie en Suisse. Il a 12 ans.

En 1949, il rencontre à Bâle Jean Tinguely, créateur des Baluba, œuvres dans lesquelles il assemble des objets ordinaires.

De 1954 à 1957, il est danseur à l'opéra de Berne, puis il se tourne vers le théâtre. Il est acteur, décorateur et mime. Il écrit également des poésies concrètes.

C'est en 1959, à Paris, qu'il commence à produire ses "tableaux pièges" .
