"Petrified wood" or "fossil wood is a stone that originates from trees covered by layers of volcanic ash.These ashes contain minerals which slowly dissolve into the groundwater. This water soaks the tree and deposits its minerals in its cells where it slowly transforms all the wood cells into petrified wood. The structure of the wood remains perfectly preserved in minerals so that we get a perfect image of the once living tree. The fossil wood from Madagascar comes out of the Triassic Period and is up to 225 million years old and very well preserved.
In this branch we can see clearly still the tube-like veins of the tree preserved.
