Robocop

RoboCop est un film d'action et de science-fiction américain sorti
en salles en 1987, réalisé par Paul Verhoeven avec un scénario
d’Edward Neumeier et de Michael Miner.
Ce film met en vedette Peter Weller (dans le rôle d'Alex Murphy /
RoboCop) ainsi que Nancy Allen, Ronny Cox, Kurtwood Smith et Miguel
Ferrer.
Le film prend place à Detroit dans le Michigan, et met en scène une
réalité alternative du monde actuel dans une société corrompue et
criminalisée. L'officier de police Alex Murphy est brutalement
assassiné par un gang de criminels, mais il est ramené à la vie par
« l'Omni Cartel des Produits » (OCP)Note 1 pour devenir le
robot-policier du futur, le RoboCop.
RoboCop aborde de manière critique et quelque peu cynique les
thèmes suivants : le monde des médias, le corporatisme, la
gentrification, la corruption, l'autoritarisme, l'avidité d'une
société mondialisée incontrôlée, les problèmes d'identité, la
dystopie et la violence de la nature humaine.
L'action du film se déroule aux États-Unis dans un futur proche, au
sein de la ville de Détroit, dans le Michigan. L'Omni Cartel des
Produits (OCP)Note 1, un conglomérat militaro-industriel et
commercial important, a la mainmise sur divers marchés lucratifs
comme, entre autres, l'armement, la conception et la fabrication de
robots et de prothèses médicales, mais aussi plus marginalement la
gestion du département de la police de Détroit.
Cependant, les hauts dirigeants de l'OCP ont un rêve : Delta City,
qui remplacera la vieille citée de Détroit moribonde. En effet, la
ville est envahie par le crime et la violence, le non-respect des
lois étant monnaie courante. « Ce cancer », que représente le
crime, doit être éradiqué avant l'embauche massive des « deux
millions de nouveaux ouvriers qui insuffleront la vie dans cette
cité », comme l'explique le dirigeant de l'OCP, ajoutant : « Il est
temps de rétablir l'équilibre en faveur de la loi et de l'ordre !
»
Le numéro deux de l'OCP, Richard « Dick » Jones, présente alors à
la direction son projet d'un robot-policier, l'ED 209Note 2. Selon
lui, la ville a besoin d'« un policier qui fonctionne 24 heures sur
24, qui n'a besoin ni de manger ni de dormir, doté d'une grande
puissance de feu et des réflexes adéquats ». À l'appui de ses
dires, une démonstration est improvisée dans la salle de réunion
entre un prototype ED 209 et un cadre de l'OCP, simulant un voyou
armé. Malheureusement, l'expérience vire au carnage : l'ED 209 abat
le « cobaye » de l'expérience en le criblant de balles (les bras de
l'ED 209 sont équipés de mitrailleuses de gros calibre), bien que
celui-ci ait obéi au robot en jetant son arme sur le sol. L'ED 209
ne semble pas avoir remarqué ce détail, et réagit comme si le
suspect refusait d'obtempérer (on entendra un scientifique présent
dans la pièce dire que le robot n'a pas entendu l'arme toucher le
sol, à cause de la moquette).
À la suite de cette « bavure », c'est au tour de Bob Morton, un
jeune cadre ambitieux de l'OCP de soumettre au directoire son
propre projet : RoboCop. Dick Jones, ulcéré que Morton, ce jeune
loup aux dents longues, vienne lui prendre la vedette, saura se
souvenir au moment opportun de ce présomptueux pour lui rendre la
monnaie de sa pièce… Bien entendu, le président de l'OCP,
après le fiasco de Jones, envisage favorablement le projet de
Morton. Il lui demande quand il pourra livrer le premier prototype.
Morton lui répond alors, de façon cynique, que plusieurs agents de
police parmi les meilleurs ont été déployés dans les zones à haut
risque de la ville. Il ne reste plus qu'à attendre que le premier
d'entre-eux se fasse tuer, afin de le transformer en robot
policier… le RoboCop.
L'officier de police Alex Murphy, qui fait équipe avec l'agent de
police Anne Lewis, fait partie de ceux qui ont été affectés dans
les secteurs mal famés de Detroit. Au cours d'une mission, il se
retrouve grièvement blessé et laissé pour mort, froidement abattu
par les malfrats qu'il poursuivait, avec à leur tête le criminel
Clarence Boddicker. Informé rapidement, Morton jubile : il tient
enfin son cobaye et peut commencer le projet RoboCop avec cette «
matière première » tant attendue. L'opération est un succès.
Murphy, la mémoire purgée de tous les souvenirs de son ancienne
vie, est réincarné dans un corps cybernétique ayant l'apparence
d'un exosquelette de métal, armé d'un puissant pistolet. Bon pour
le service, il est envoyé combattre le crime dans Detroit. L'OCP le
réaffecte dans son ancien commissariat incognito, bien que son
ancienne équipière Lewis soit prise d'un doute à son sujet.
Si, dans un premier temps, RoboCop fait merveille et « nettoie » la
cité des ces crapules grâce à ses méthodes « expéditives », il
devient pris de doutes, ayant reconnu durant une de ses
interventions un des malfrats qui l'avait abattu. Il est bientôt en
proie à des cauchemars, en rapport avec sa vie passée (notamment sa
famille), et rêve même du jour de son assassinat. Oubliant alors
les directives de l'OCP, RoboCop part à la recherche de son passé ;
il quitte le commissariat et se lance à la poursuite des hommes qui
l'ont tué…
