Il n'est, pour apprécier l'œuvre de SOMMERSET MAUGHAM à sa juste valeur, que d'écouter ses pairs. Chacun l'a loué, de George ORWELL à GRAHAM GREENE, de Raymond CHANDLER à Patricia HIGHSMITH, pour qui ses nouvelles semblent englober toute l'expérience humaine en quelques pages. C'est pourquoi, mieux que d'autres, Maugham franchit comme avec allégresse l'écueil du temps : son art tout de transparence, de retenue et de mesure - même dans l'indicible - l'a, d'ores et déjà, porté au rang de ces classiques qu'il admirait tant.
