David Villa Sánchez (born 3 December 1981) is a Spanish retired professional footballer who played as a striker. Villa is regarded by pundits as one of the best forwards of his generation, and one of the best Spanish strikers of all time. Villa is currently working as the Technical Advisor and Head of Global Football Operations of the Indian Super League club Odisha FC.
Nicknamed El Guaje (The Kid in Asturian) due to a reputation of playing football with children much older than him, Villa sustained a serious injury as a child but managed to start his professional career with Sporting de Gijón in 2001. He moved to Real Zaragoza after two seasons, where he made his La Liga debut, and won the Copa del Rey and Supercopa de España. He joined Valencia in 2005 for a transfer fee of €12 million and captured another Copa del Rey title. At age 28, Villa registered 28 league goals and garnered a move to Barcelona for €40 million in 2010, where he won his first La Liga and UEFA Champions League titles, and scored in the 2011 final. He left the club in 2013 after concluding a €5.1 million transfer to Atlético Madrid, where he won another La Liga title. After a single season in the Spanish capital, Villa departed to join new MLS franchise New York City, where he became the club's record goalscorer and appearance maker, winning the MLS MVP Award for best player in 2016. In 2018, Villa announced his departure from New York, to join Vissel Kobe in Japan.
Villa made his international debut for Spain in 2005. He participated in four major tournaments, and was an integral member of the Spain teams that won UEFA Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup. He scored three goals at the 2006 World Cup, was the top scorer at Euro 2008, and earned the Silver Boot at the 2010 World Cup. His displays for Spain and Valencia saw him named in the FIFA FIFPro World11 for 2010. He became the first Spanish player to ever reach 50 international goals and, after a brief comeback in 2017, he retired from the national team with 59 goals in 98 matches, making him Spain's all-time top goalscorer as well as the country's top scorer in the World Cup, with nine goals.

Comenzó su carrera profesional en Segunda División con el Real Sporting de Gijón2 hasta que, en la temporada 2003-04, fue fichado por el Real Zaragoza, equipo en el cual se convirtió en internacional,2 y conquistó una Copa del Rey3 y una Supercopa de España.4 Después de dos campañas se trasladó al Valencia C. F., donde repitió triunfo en la Copa5 y llegó a situarse como el quinto goleador histórico del club en la Liga tras Mundo, Waldo Machado, Mario Kempes y Fernando Gómez.6 El 22 de junio de 2010 recaló en las filas del F. C. Barcelona2 y añadió a su palmarés dos campeonatos de Liga, dos Supercopas de España, una Copa del Rey, una Liga de Campeones, una Supercopa de Europa y un Mundial de Clubes. En julio de 2013 se fue traspasado al Club Atlético de Madrid, donde completó su palmarés al conquistar la Liga 2013-14.7 Además, ocupa la decimotercera posición en la clasificación de los máximos goleadores en la historia de la Liga, con 185 tantos en 352 partidos disputados a lo largo de sus once campañas en Primera División.8
Con la selección española, debutó contra San Marino el 9 de febrero de 2005.9 Desde entonces, ha participado en el Mundial 2006, donde marcó tres goles;10 en la Eurocopa 2008, en la que se proclamó campeón de Europa11 y fue máximo goleador con cuatro tantos;12 en el Mundial 2010, donde consiguió el campeonato del mundo13 y obtuvo, además, la Bota de Plata como segundo mayor anotador, empatado a cinco dianas con Thomas Müller,14 y el Balón de Bronce como tercer mejor jugador del campeonato;15 y en el Mundial 2014. También es el futbolista con mayor número de goles en la historia de la selección, cincuenta y nueve,16 y el máximo goleador español en Copas del Mundo, con nueve tantos repartidos en sus tres participaciones.17 En 2011 fue galardonado con la Medalla de Oro de la Real Orden del Mérito Deportivo, máxima distinción individual del deporte otorgada en España.
