Ancient naval artillery cannon, an authentic vestige of the age of great sailing ships and oceanic navigation during the era of galleons.
This heavy and massive piece remained for a very long period in a marine environment, which gave it a natural ancient patina and a homogeneous surface erosion. The cannon is presented in its original historical condition, without any restoration or modern modification.
The barrel shows the very eroded remains of a cast emblem, now only partially legible in relief. Although prolonged immersion has greatly softened the details, the position, residual volume and organization of this relief correspond to marking practices observed on ancient naval artillery, where coats of arms or emblems were cast directly onto the body of the cannon. This advanced erosion is consistent with several centuries spent underwater and does not detract from the historical reading of the piece, which retains a clear morphological identity.
This cannon is equipped with an ancient aiming system known as a “dispart”, integrated into the barrel during manufacture. It consists of a cast rear axial rail located just in front of the touch hole, as well as a front sight close to the muzzle. This type of aiming device is characteristic of early artillery prior to the standardization of the 18th century and allows this piece to be dated to a period of use between the late 16th century and the 17th century, corresponding to the height of the galleon era and armed commercial navigation.
Through its morphology, the absence of later decorative ornamentation, the presence of a cast dispart and the remains of an original emblem, this cannon clearly belongs to the tradition of Iberian naval artillery, as employed on the major maritime routes linking Europe, Africa and the Americas. The wooden structure of the ship having disappeared over time, this cannon now remains one of the rare material witnesses of this period of intensive oceanic navigation and long-distance maritime trade.

Cette pièce lourde et massive a séjourné pendant une très longue période en milieu marin, ce qui lui a conféré une patine ancienne naturelle et une érosion homogène de surface. Le canon est présenté dans son état historique d’origine, sans restauration ni modification moderne.
Le fût présente les restes très érodés d’un emblème moulé, aujourd’hui partiellement lisible en relief. Bien que l’immersion prolongée ait fortement atténué les détails, la position, le volume résiduel et l’organisation de ce relief correspondent aux usages de marquage observés sur l’artillerie navale ancienne, où les armes ou emblèmes étaient portés directement sur le corps du canon. Cette érosion avancée est cohérente avec un séjour de plusieurs siècles sous l’eau et n’altère pas la lecture historique de la pièce, qui conserve une identité morphologique claire.
Ce canon est équipé d’un système de visée ancien dit « dispart », intégré au fût lors de la fabrication. Il comprend un rail axial arrière moulé, situé juste en avant de la lumière, ainsi qu’un repère frontal proche de la bouche. Ce dispositif de visée est caractéristique de l’artillerie ancienne antérieure à la standardisation du XVIIIe siècle et permet de situer l’utilisation de cette pièce entre la fin du XVIe siècle et le XVIIe siècle, période correspondant à l’apogée des galions et de la navigation commerciale armée.
Par sa morphologie, son absence d’ornementation décorative tardive, la présence d’un dispart moulé et les vestiges d’un emblème d’origine, ce canon s’inscrit clairement dans la tradition de l’artillerie navale ibérique, telle qu’elle était employée sur les grandes routes maritimes reliant l’Europe, l’Afrique et les Amériques. La structure en bois du navire ayant disparu avec le temps, ce canon demeure aujourd’hui l’un des rares témoins matériels de cette période de navigation océanique intensive et de commerce maritime à longue distance.
