Obverse (Slovene): Denarna Nakaznica, portrait of Slovenian woman in national dress, ornate guilloché, eagle watermark crest.
Reverse (German): Geldanweisung über 1000 Lire, same portrait, bilingual legal text, eagle watermark motif.

Background

After Italy occupied part of Slovenia in 1941, Ljubljana Province was annexed.
Local administration, under Italian and later German control, needed a stable currency.
Notes were issued backed by deposits with the Banca d’Italia.
After Italy’s collapse in 1943, the Germans kept the system and notes in circulation.
Purpose: Emergency local money, pegged to Italian lire, but legally binding only in the province.

Circulation & Scarcity

Denominations issued: 50, 100, 500, and 1000 Lire.
Most common: 100 and 500 Lire.
1000 Lire: Highest denomination, printed in lower numbers, much less encountered in circulation.
Rarity today: Numista Rarity Index 93 — confirms it’s among the least frequently offered.

Collector Significance

WWII Occupation Note: Direct link to Italy’s and later Germany’s control over Slovenian territory.
High denomination: Shows economic inflation and the administrative attempt to issue larger values.
Bilingual printing: Unique reflection of political situation — Slovene identity under German-Italian oversight.
