The art of task writing is a distinctive field of chess and has a long history. The origins of a given composition are lost in the distance of the Middle Ages; Its modern artistic principles took shape in the middle of the last century. In the XX century, the development of a given art continues. A number of new directions are emerging, the content is being enriched, technical mastery is being improved, the geography of the composition is expanding, special periodicals are appearing, etc. Popular coverage of this multilateral process is the goal of this work.
The book covers the period covering almost the entire first half of the XX century. The Second World War, interrupting the international relations of chess composers for several years, delimited a certain stage of development. After the war, a new generation of composition masters appeared, which opened the next page of its history.
The first part of the book describes the main task schools and areas that developed in the pre-war period. For their characterization, only the most typical examples are given without going into details requiring special knowledge from the reader; there is no classification of the problem subjects; The use of special terms is minimized.
The second part is devoted to a review of the development of task composition in individual countries.
Given 375 compositions.
