Die Gattung umfasst je nach Auffassung des Autors 100 bis 250 Arten. Diese bilden durch ihre typischen Merkmale Stacheln, Hagebutten und unpaarig gefiederte Blätter eine sehr gut abgegrenzte Gattung.
