Evans Brothers Limited, London, 1959. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Photographs (illustrator). First Edition. 8vo. Dust jacket complete, unclipped. Blue cloth with bright gilt titling on spine. Map end papers. 4 line xmas inscription. Frontis portrait plate. Soiled title page. 236 pages clean and tight.
This unusual biography has all the excitement and drama of a novel by Rider Haggard, yet it is completely factual and indeed its subject is still alive. The career of Ewart Grogan, D.S.O., here described by his nephew, is a story of pioneering adventure unique in our time.
Ewart Grogan was the first white man to make the hazardous trek from the Cape to Cairo. It was a quixotic adventure undertaken to prove himself worthy of the girl he loved and wished to marry. His epic journey through largely unbroken and unknown Africa brought incredible hardship and danger, but it made history and proved of the greatest value to Britain and the Commonwealth. That journey was made over half a century ago. Since then Ewart Grogan has had many more adventures-and lived to tell the tale. He won his D.S.O. and was three times mentioned in despatches for his work behind the lines in the First World War. But his greatest achievement has been as a pioneer and Empire-builder in Kenya from its early days. Cecil Rhodes once told Grogan to `give himself to Africa'. This book shows how splendidly that was achieved.
Norman Wymer has vividly re-enacted the drama of a career that brings in Queen Victoria and Cecil Rhodes, Joseph Chamberlain, Winston Churchill and Ernest Bevin, Woodrow Wilson and William Randolph Hearst and many other personalities.
