50th Anniversary of the Cooperative Founded

in 1947, the joint concern, together with its subsidiary companies, forms the Cooperative. It is Austria´s largest provider of electricity. Electricity produced by the Cooperative meets more than half of Austria´s power needs. Supplied are provincial electricity companies, industrial concerns, and the Austrian Railway. On average, over 90% of energy is produced from hydroelectric power, while the rest is from thermal power. The Cooperative has over 70 hydroelectric power stations. The Cooperative owns and operates the national maximum high voltage network and oversees the balance between electricity production and consumption in Austria. The high voltage network has been in the process of being upgraded from 220 kV to 380 kV since 1980. Additional responsibilities of the Cooperative include assessing future electricity use, power production in conjunction with provincial power suppliers, construction and operation of the national high voltage network, and international electricity interests. In 1947, the Cooperative´s founding year, Austria´s per capita electricity consumption was only around 500 kWh. Today, Austria´s per capita consumption is around 7.000 kWh, which is covered mostly by power it produces. The stamp´s illustration is symbolic.
