75th Birthday of Oskar Werner

"Divinely gifted youth", was the critique praising the highly-intelligent 18-year-old Burg actor. Born in Vienna in 1922, Oskar Werner always wanted to be an actor, no less at one of the most famous theaters in the world, Vienna´s Burgtheater. Employed here in 1941, he celebrated triumphant stage successes after the war. In addition there were evenings of readings with works by Goethe, Schiller, Rilke; captured on many records. His appearances at the Burgtheater became more seldom, yet an international career in film began: "Jules and Jim" (with Jeanne Moreau), "Ship of Fools" (with Vivien Leigh), "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold" (with Richard Burton), and "In the Fisherman´s Shoes" (with Sir Laurence Olivier and Anthony Quinn). His last 20 years would be better left out of his biography: idle themes and projects, clouded by unpredictability and illness. Shattered, this brilliant actor died on October 23, 1984. His grave lies in Liechtenstein where he journeyed in search of refuge in turbulent times before his death.
