Day of the Stamp 1973

This year´s special issue stamp honoring the Day of the Stamp depicts the patron saint of post and philately,Archangel Gabriel. The Scriptures mention three angels, among them Gabriel, which translated from Hebrew means:"Man of God" or "Strength of God". The archangel is a well-known figure in Jewish, Christian, and Islamic culturalcircles. In the Old Testament, Gabriel stands at one of the four corners of God´s throne and from there commandslarge multitudes of angles. In the New Testament, he more often assumes the role of God´s messenger. Amongothers, he appeared to Mary to convey to her the message of the savior´s incarnation and of her being chosen to be themother. Since ancient times, particularly throughout the Christian world, Archangel Gabriel has been recognized as amessenger and bearer of good news - as the angel of proclamation. Postal and telegraph workers as well asmessengers, newspaper carriers, and philatelists honor him as their patron saint. In following with this, Pope PiousXII declared Gabriel the saintly patron of telecommunications in his papal letter of January 12, 1951. Twenty-oneyears later on December 9, 1972, Pope Paul VI pronounced Archangel Gabriel the patron saint of post and philately aswell. The stamp shows Archangel Gabriel from Lorenz Luchsperger´s annunciation group found in the parish churchin Wiener Neustadt.
