In October 1886, a brave and intrepid explorer, the Romanian engineer, Don Julio Popper, arrived on Isla Grande (Mainland) Tierra del Fuego. He had been born in Bucharest Romania on 15 December 1857. He had developed a keen interest in exploration and science. Popper also had the good fortune to be the discoverer of rich gold bearing sites on the beaches to the north of Bahía San Sebastían and to be the first to develop successful productive mining plant for the extraction of gold from the Fugean coasts. Popper also invented, and patented in 1889, the famous machine for extracting the gold from the gold bearing sands of submarine and beach deposits of Tierra del Fuego which he called the "gold harvester". Coins were minted, postage stamps have been issued for local needs, and maps have been drawn. Even today, many of the names given by this explorer to geographical features and locations in Tierra del Fuego survive. For example, the naming of the Mar Argentino to the seas which wash the extreme south of the republic from the Canal de Beagle (Beagle Channel) to the Estrecho de Le Maire (Le Maire Straights) and from the Isla de los Estados (Statten Island) to Cabo de Hornos (Cape Horn). These activities were later in evidence in his cartography "TIERRA DEL FUEGO", according to the exploration and studies by the engineer JULIO POPPER, 1886-1891."
