Solčavsko – Three Valleys in Harmony
We continue the Tourism series with stamps featuring destinations
and areas in Slovenia that have won the title of European
Destination of Excellence (EDEN) in the competition organised by
the European Commission. Up to 2011 the European Commission has
announced a new competition theme on an annual basis. Beginning in
2012, the competition will be held every two years. The EDEN
project and competition are key components of European tourism
policy that together are helping to create a network of new
destinations that consistently guarantee social, cultural and
environmentally sustainable development and forms of
non-aggressive, sustainable (green) tourism. The result is an
emerging network of as yet undiscovered tourist destinations in
Europe that represent a precious contrast to those major European
tourist attractions, resorts and areas that are facing the full
aggressiveness of the tourist industry and, above all, its
consequences. In 2009 Slovenia was represented in the European
competition by the Solčavsko district, which took first place
in the national competition to choose the country´s EDEN entry. The
Solčavsko district consists of three remarkable valleys (hence
the official tourist slogan in the title) surrounded by the peaks
of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps and the Karavanke. These are: Robanov
Kot, Matkov Kot and Logarska Dolina. The beauty of these three
glacial valleys derives not only from the well-conserved natural
environment, but also from the culture and way of life of the
people who live here, building on the cultural heritage that has
been handed down to them and seeking new challenges for their own
life in the modern age. Numerous mountain farms in the area welcome
tourists, hikers and climbers with hospitality. The farms of the
Solčavsko district are in fact among the best in Slovenia in
terms of quality of tourismrelated activities. The Rinka tourist
information centre in Solčava, the centre of the municipality,
is perhaps the best starting point for rich experiences of nature,
culture and the creative endeavours of the local population.
