Thabit Ibn Qurra was a mathematician, physician, astronomer and translator of the Islamic Golden Age who lived in Baghdad in the second half of the ninth century.
He made important discoveries in algebra, geometry and astronomy. In astronomy, Thabit is considered one of the first reformers of the Ptolemaic system, and in mechanics he was a founder of statics. He is known for having calculated the solution to a chessboard problem involving an exponential series.
Thabit was born in Harran (known as Carrhae in antiquity) in Higher Mesopotamia / Assyria (in modern day Turkey). At the invitation of Muhammad bin Musa bin Shakir, one of the Banu Musa brothers, Thabit went to study in Baghdad at the House of Wisdom. He was an ethnic Assyrian, a native Syriac / Aramaic speaker and belonged to the Sabians of Harran, a sect of Hermeticists. Other sources credit him to be a Mandaean. In either case, both sects have a great interest in astronomy, astrology, and mathematics..
Thabit´s major contribution lies in mathematics and astrono-my. He was instrumental in extending the concept of traditional
geometry to geometrical algebra and proposed several theories that led to the development of non-Euclidean geometry, spheri-
cal trigonometry, integral calculus and real numbers. He applied arithmetical terminology to geometrical quantities, and studied several aspects of conicsections, notably those of parabola and ellipse. A number of his
computations aimed at determining the surfaces and volumes Another important aspect of Thabit´s work was his book on
the composition of ratios. In this Thabit deals with arithmeticaloperations applied to ratios of geometrical quantities.
Thabit generalised Pythagoras´s theorem to an arbitrary tri-angle (as did Pappus). He also discussed parabolas, angle trisection and magic squares. Thabit´s work on parabolas and parabo-
liods is of particular importance since it is one of the steps takentowards the discovery of the integral calculus.
The Sabians lived in the vicinity of the main center of the Caliphate until 1258, when the Mongols destroyed their last shrine. During Muslim rule, they were a protected minority, and around the time of al-Mutawakkil´s reign Harran became a center for philosophical, esoteric, and medical learning. |
