INTRODUCTION
Fame, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, is the condition of being much talked about, and the fighter aircraft whose stories I tell in this book were much talked about during the Second World War. They have aIl found their place in the history of air warfare and typify their epoch. Each suffered from sorne technical faults which imposed limitations on the tac tics employed by its pilots; each experienced its successes and failures, and each possessed its own dis¬tinctive personality which evoked strong affection or profound dislike in the pilot that flew it, colouring his mentality in action. The Spitfire, the Messerschmitt 109, the Thunderbolt and the Zero-Sen; each evinced characteristics associated with the nation that con¬ceived it. But whatever its nationality and whatever the roles that the exigencies of war demanded of it, it was to find a niche in aviation\´s metaphorical \"hall of fame\".
In this book I have endeavoured to correct many of the fallacies which originated during the war years, either for purposes of propaganda or as a result of ignorance of the true facts, and have persisted ever since. The fighters of the four nations represented in the following pages are listed in the approximate
order in which they made their service débuts. Russian fighters have been omitted owing to the paucity of detailed information concerning their de¬velopment and the numerous contradictions in the accounts of their relative success and operational use; while those of Italy, despite the high creative ability of Italian aircraft designers, never quite attained the stature of the fighters evolved by other powers engaged in the Second World War and do not, to my mind, therefore qualify for inclusion.
At this juncture, I would like to record my deep gratitude to Richard M. Bueschel, without whose indefatigable labours the details of Japanese fighters contained in this book would have been far less com¬prehensive; to Harold G. Martin, Mauno Salo and Dr. Alexander Lippisch, aIl of whom contributed much valuable pictorial and factual detail. Finally, I wish to thank my good friend Gert W. Heumann, who has good cause to remember a certain Spitfire over the Western Desert and whose tireless efforts in the cause of detail accuracy have resulted in what are probably the most accurate drawings of wartime aircraft ever prepared.
