Background:

  At the Second International Conference of Socialist women held in 1910, it was decided, at the suggestion of Clara Zetkin, that March 8 be the International Working Women´s Day, to commemorate the Women workers´ strike in Chicago in 1909 and to unite women of all countries in the common struggle for their rights.  Thenceforth Zetkin, this glorious name, has always been closely connected with the International Women´s Day.  Clara Zetkin was born in a beautiful village, Saxony State of Germany.  She was fond of reading in her childhood and often thought things out for herself.  In her early youth, she started reading works by Marx and Engels.  She first joined the Socialist Democratic Party of Germany and later became a member of the Communist Party of Germany.  She often went to spread Marxism among workers, and established close ties with the Workers´ movement.  When the Second International was founded in 1889, Zetkin was elected its secretary.  She delivered a speech entitled "For the Emancipation of Women".  From then on, she fought for women´s rights through the "Equality", a newspaper of which she was the chief editor.  Under her leadership, great achievements were made in the emancipation of women in Germany.

Design:

  The one-stamp set shows a head portrait of Clara Zetkin, against a background of blooming winter jasmine.  It means that the Spring of the movement for women´s emancipation led by Zetkin will surely come.  It also expresses Chinese people´s high respect for the leader of the International socialist women´s movement.  The whole painting is light in colour and simple in the technique of drawing.  The light yellow winter jasmine flowers set off very well her kindly face and firm and self-confident facial expression.
