I'm still hanging in there, although there has been the odd desperate moment.

Celebration tomorrow evening. Enough money saved already to treat us to a meal out!
Great stuff! Congrats! It will be very noticeable how much you save, I am sure.

One thing I wondered, and you have probably already considered it but thought I would mention it anyway, would it be useful to go to counselling or join a group who are trying to kick the habit as well?

They say these things help.... you don't feel quite so alone in the fight.

Old, Nov & Dec I was attending a "smoking cesation clinic" at my local dr.'s surgery. I used to come away from there desperate for a smoke. That was absolutely useless - she was always running late and I've never received one single helpful tip in about 6 or 7 sessions.

I agree with Bob - Cold turkey is the way.

As soon as you are tempted think of the struggle you have gone through to get so far and what a waste all that effort would have been if you do succumb to the temptation!

It must be doubly hard for you to give up than it was for me as my other half does not smoke so I did not get the whiff of ciggy smoke except when I went out. In those days you could still smoke in bars and restaurants - so I just avoided those places until I thought I had broken the habit.

Even after giving up I sometimes get the urge for a fag especially if I get the whiff of French tobacco as I used to smoke Citanes (like the proverbial chimney).

I gave up smoking a few months ago and got very good advice from the Smoking Cessation nurse including one whch made a big difference - after giving out all the dire warnings, effects of patches, withdrawal etc and all the negative physical aspects of smoking she said:

"If you've done everything and really really really need a cigarette - have ONE - it does NOT mean you are back to square one, you have advanced considerably and will get there in due course".

She said that psychologically it is much worse for you to go through that agony of self-denial and makes it more likely that you will return to be a full-time smoker, plus physically the stress you put yourself under by the denial raises blood pressure and the effect can be worse than the not smoking at all.

Smoking, I find, like many other things, is predominantly in the mind, and that piece of advice - that it is not an endless road with the continuing pangs of wanting a cigarette, was a great help to me to get my head round the whole thing.

Result: - I've had 3 cigarettes in 6 months (from 15-20 a day for 40+ years) and do not feel under pressure nor have any desire to return to being a full-time smoker, but the 'crutch' is there.

Perhaps worth a try - what is there to lose!

Sam

Sorry to hear that... I've never been in your situation so it was just a guess really because I have heard that groups do help. Maybe some do, some don't huh.

Carry on though... you will get there!

Please support me by asking as often as possible how I am getting on.

I have been a smoker of 20+ a day for over 30 years. There have been many failed attempts to quit over the years - often only lasting 2 or 3 days.

Last week Monday I started another attempt. Since then I've been down to 5 a day using "nicotine replacement therapy". Today we've travelled down to our holiday cottage and I've only had 3 ciggies today.

I'm hoping that the change of routine/scenery will help me to quit altogether, but I only have till next Sunday to achieve this.

Just thought you'd like to know, today is National No-smoking Day

Hope it's all going well

How ironic is that!

I had a "slip up" this morning.

We overslept and I was really harrassed getting breakfast & packed lunches sorted and grabbed a cigarette. I only had 3 or 4 puffs though and have been behaving since then.

Stick at it. I'm sure you can do it. I stopped 35 years ago from up to 40 per day. After trying a few methods I found that "cold turkey" hacked it for me.
I just wish you every success!!!

Moonstone,

I felt really cross with myself for "giving in", but afterwards actually remembered what you'd written - thank you!

Bob,

I'd have to throw hubby out to get rid of the ciggys altogether . Not quite ready for that yet. :D

Everybody,

Thank you very much for your contributions. I am glad I started this thread and your support is much appreciated.

I'm hoping that the change of routine/scenery will help me to quit altogether, but I only have till next Sunday to achieve this.

I came from a smoker's house.

My dad lite up 5-6 packs a day.

All my childhood I coughed up black phlegm from second hand smoke.

I left and joined the Navy. Amazing how good food tasted away from the smoke.

My dad never stopped smoking until medical conditions made him do so..

I came finally home to stay after 18 plus years and found him tied to an "O" tank.

Very Sad.

I then Started my family very late in life, but my dad got to finally be a grand dad. Slowly his lungs turned to stone...

The Day before he died he was playing with my youngest boy....when I picked him up from my dad..my Dad made me promise to never let my boys smoke.....

He died that night....from chronic lung failure

yesterday My Oldest (Antonio) asked about Grandpa Roy. Why did he smoke he asked? I had no real answer at hand...

Then he stated; "You know he probably didn't know it was bad. I read that companies can make you think that something that is bad for you is actually good for you...even when it isn't."

My middle son (Marcellos) jumped in: "If you smoke you are stupid!"

Antonio agreed with him.

Then my youngest (Angelo) the one that was with my dad the night before he died added his two cents worth.... "Smoking is dum...I rather have grandpa Roy here playing with us...."

I saw all three of my boys nod in agreement...and somewhere I think my Dad would be happy. My boys will never smoke...because smoking cost them their grandfather.

So if you can't stop for your self. Please stop for the others around you.

Stefano

Stefano,

Thank you for sharing that. It brought tears to my eyes.

I am back on track after yesterday morning's slip, but I think this afternoon has been the hardest so far. Probably my own fault for allowing the nicotine replacement to drop.

However, it's a week since my last whole ciggy and maybe I should take stock:

On the positive side:

My sense of smell has improved.
My sense of taste has improved.
My skin is less dry.
My skin colour is improved (although that might be due to the fact that I spent most of last weekend outdoors in the sunshine).
My cough has almost completely gone.
I can run upstairs without being out of breath.
The money saved is considerable - already had a meal out and I'm saving up rapidly for the next treat.

On the negative side:

I'm quite "moody" at times.
I've put on weight - I have to stop eating chocolate as a substitute for smoking!

That's about it - I think the ++ outweigh the --

Pretty much the same here.

OH has reduced by about 50% and I am hanging in there, but only just at times.

I've actually been and had a chat with a pharmacist today. I'm ok as long as I keep the NRT levels up, but if I allow them to drop it becomes very hard. I'm changing strategy. I'll be trying medium strength patches from tomorrow and use the other stuff only as and when I need "an urgent dose", rather than taking that at regular intervals and occasionally forgetting it.

I'm very sorry to have to report that I "slipped up" today.

Since I gave up I've kept to a quite regular daily routine. Today I had to change that routine and after lunch I felt desperate. I lit a ciggy, smoked about 3 quarters of it and decided that I wasn't actually enjoying it.

As on the previous occasion, and in line with Moonstone's posts, I'll take this in my stride and forget about it. Hopefully next time I feel desperate I'll remember this and it will stop me from lighting up again.

Thanks again to all who have contributed to this thread and have helped me along. I'll try not to let you and myself down again.
