Hello,

many envelopes and PC, taxed in Great Britain in the years 20/30, wear a tax mark formed with a number (tax amount in pence) above a combination of letters. Who could indicate me the meaning of these combinations (on the example below, a 2 pence tax with the letters "I.S." and one other letter I can't read) ?

I saw many different combinations with the letters I.S. = IS E, IS G, IS N, IS R and so on ... and so others combinations with the letters F.B.
I guess it's a code : but what kind of code ? What's the meaning of these letters "I.S."

Thank you very much.

D.

I got a feeling it means "Inland Section"....but I am not quite sure ?

Any postmarks with "N.P.B" is newspaper branch and "F.S" is Foreign section..."F.O" is Foreign Office

I did know a gentleman over here in the UK who could answer you....I will see if I can find him out....he wrote many a book about GB postmarks and he has helped me many a time and I have learned quite a bit off him when it comes to Duplex postmarks

I will see if I can get in touch with him for you

Yes....Just got my book out, it's "Inland Section"....the letters below the I.S are, I believe, the office to which the "to pay" has come from
