Oh joy...!!?

50 millions - OMG. I just wonder how many millions of the stamps offered at Delcampe that are fake items ? Probably 30 - 40 % !!?? Delcampe announced some months ago that they would delete all sales of fake items (cinderellas) and suspend the sellers offering such illegal items. Have you given up this crusade towards fakes ?:rules:

How many of these are due to some sellers dumping large numbers of virtually identical stamps which only qualify as different because they are used?
Delcampe is a great site but I just wish that something could be done about this problem

Nice job.

Very , very , Fine site.

Always improving.

By far..., my favorite site to sell on.

Take some time out..enjoy this moment.

Then....... ; Lets work together to make the site "better" the next few months instead of "bigger".

It is time for Delcampe to address all the past (& ongoing) concerns of sellers about the site.

That is...if you want to become the biggest collectible site on the Internet.

Great job.

Delcampe announced some months ago that they would delete all sales of fake items (cinderellas) and suspend the sellers offering such illegal items. Have you given up this crusade towards fakes ?:rules:

Some time ago I wrote to Delcampe as follows:
I decided to test the speed of the Delcampe Web Site and I must say that I found that it had become very fast from a response point of view. This, for you, must be a definite PLUS.
It seemed that I was trawling through hundreds of 10c., 20c., 30cent + Lots, sometimes with ten lots from the same vendor, each one offering the same valueless 10cent or 15c stamps, with ten illustrations, one after the other of this same schoolchild’s stamp. If nothing else, they could have had a single lot, with a statement that ten of this same item are available. What a waste of GOOD WEB SPACE.

I opened the System and decided I would do a test of Delcampe and Ebay. I would select two Countries at RANDOM and analyse the first 30 items for each country that I find on each of Delcampe & Ebay. The Countries that I selected happened to be France (after 1900) and Gibraltar. From Ebay I excluded any “Featured” items at the top of the list and just took into account the first 30 ordinary items listed.

This is what I found :

France :
Delcampe first 30 : 10 cents (5 lots), 15c (4), 20c (3), 25c (1), 40c (2), 45c (1), 50c (2), 60c (1), 75c (1), $1 (2), $1.50 (1), $1.95 (1), $2.00 (1), $2.25 (1), $3.23 (1), $9.00 (1), $20.00 (1) & $24.95 (1). THERE WERE NO BIDS ON ANY OF THE 30 DELCAMPE LOTS.
Analyses of Delcampe 30 : Grand Total $72.43 (= 30 Lots at $2.41 average per Lot). 66% of these were UNDER 75cents. 30% of the Delcampe Lots were 15cents or LESS !

Ebay first 30 : in order as listed (in US $) 9.99, 150.00, 8.75, 9.50, 49.00, 279.99, 149.99, 19.99, 29.99, 6.99, 6.99, 29.00, 29.00, 37.01, 109.50, 7.99, 19.00, 24.00, 13.38, 22.00, 24.99, 0.79, 9.99, 35.00, 19.00, 20.00, 9.99, 49.00, 150.00, & 1.99 THERE WERE 27 BIDS ON 7 OF THE 30 EBAY LOTS
Analyses of Ebay 30 : Grand Total $1,332.81 (= 30 lots at $44.43 average per lot) There were 0% lots under 75 cent

===================================================

GIBRALTAR (sorry, no item by item breakdown…forgot to record them)

Delcampe first 30 : Grand Total $62.61 (= 30 lots at $2.08 average per lot) THERE WERE NO BIDS ON ANY OF THE 30 DELCAMPE LOTS.

Ebay first 30 (excluding featured items) : Grand Total $356.84 (= 30 lots at $11.89 average per lot). THERE WERE 17 BIDS ON 10 OF THE 30 EBAY LOTS.

Over a period I have literally spent hour after hour browsing Delcampe, which, technically speaking, is now a superbly laid out innovative web site, second to none. What is a shame that we are expected to endlessly browse through valueless penny stamps which are not even an investment to the buyer, who will NEVER be able to recoup his investment, irrespective of how small it is.

It is easy to have 50 Million Items if the majority of them are pure repetition of 10, 20 or 30 of the same "Penny Schoolchildren" worthless items from the same Seller, all of them with NO BIDS on them. This is why I have written to Delcampe on a number of occasions. Since Delcampe have not replied, perhaps the Members might comment.

Well done and thank you to all of the Delcampe team for the hard work. :applause:

A shame I only put how many postcards there were on the site at the time Link (http) or we would have been able to see exactly how much an increase it would have been since than!

But as Stefano has pointed out, it's not just about growth - there certainly is room for improvement to make Delcampe an even better site. :deal:

Great job. Well done.

You and the other members are to be commended for all the hard work that has gone into reaching this milestone.

But as the well deserved celebration continues, I wish you could impress upon management that whether it's 50 million or even 100 million items, a very large percentage of those items are duplicates. And it's a real pain (and complete waste of time) to wade through all this :censored: to get to items of interest.

One of the great features of Delcampe is the comparative ease of using the site, and very reasonable fees to sellers, but so many sellers abuse the "duplicate items rule." People can collect what they want to collect, and if they collect what I personally think would be worthless, then they should be allowed to. But there's no possible reason to continue to allow numerous listings over and over of the same item.

It's interesting to see the number of members who seldom if ever post a comment, who have responded to your good news, with a comment about the many, many useless listings.

But it's still a great site, and your team is to be congratulated.:applause:

Sgclassics:The material in my stamp collecting area is by and large very ordinary on Delcampe and if there is something worthwhile it is hopelessly overpriced and gathering dust from being on the site literally years....... shouldn't this be a clue to the seller. If I set aside new issue purchases from a couple of dealers in the UK,I would not make 6 purchases a year on Delcampe while on E*** I would easily average 6 a month. If Delcampe wishes to make in roads into the stamp auction community ways have to be found to curtail some of the crap and in turn to attract more better quality and unusual items.

Congratulations for this great milestone.

How ever the major challenge a buyer IS facing is fancy selling price of the most commonest items. Some time I wonder the price which is quoted is for a single stamp or for 100 stamps for the same item.

My only perspective is Delcampe should have a separate monitor team who can warn such of those members who are literally abusing the FREE space of the site.

A journey of buyer should be a pleasure and not a pain.
Hope ' those' sellers realize this problem and act accordingly.

Fantastic news, congratulations to all concerned!

As I celebrate with you though, I echo the words of SCView and Mainly and others in that the site does need now to concentrate on perfecting itself from a technical point of view; also the experience of new buyers who tell me that it is not easy to understand how to pay for items etc.

Like the others though, I am happy here on Delcampe and intend on staying!

It is not only buyers who suffer from the mass listing of "cheap" stamps. Admittedly, sellers don't have to search through all the c**p unless they are also buyers. We suffer because our modest listings are swamped and if buyers are reluctant to search because of this swamping our sales are reduced.
These problems have also been raised in another thread of the forum.

Sebastien, please change your policy about mass listing of used stamps

Now that's a big number so congratulations may be in order.

Delcampe is a great site, but it could have been so much better if all the items with little or no interest to collectors had been removed. This is low value items, faulty items and so on.

Doing some fast calculation will probably show that there are less the 1 per cent of the items in any given stamp category that carries bid. Which mean the amount available should probably have been 5 million or less and not 50 million.

As it is now the site will kill itself as an interesting place for buyers - as a buyer I have no time to search tens of thousands of inferior stamps to get the 1 good one.

As it is now the site will kill itself as an interesting place for sellers - as a seller I want to put my items for sale on a site where it does not disapperar amongst inferior material.

Selling lately - 1 item in ca. 3 months. Perfectly sound, faultless stamps with not far from SON (lux) cancellations - never even looked at because they disappear amongst material the buyer DOES NOT want to see.

So my selling is back on eBay where I sell a bout 80 % of all my listing inside a couple of weeks. Ant th domestic QXL where I sell almost as well.

So dear Delcampe Team - do a thourougly research on what this 50 million items consist of. How many has stayed up for sale for more than 1 month - 6 months - 1 year etc. How many has never even been looked at.

My guess is that if you put up a listing fee equal to 10 c from next time the item relists the total of items offered will plunge dramatically - may be down to 10 millions or even less.

And chance is that an inferior item which has not sold after 2 or 3 relisting will never sell at all - so quit the possibility for 99 times relisting.
A quick search esimates that of those listed, only around 4 % are newly listed (last 7 days or so).

I think that rather than a listing Fee, Items should be limited to the amount of renewals on the site.

After 18 months require that items be relisted one by one rather than by Bulk relisting.

After 36 Months archive any unsold listings so that a dealer would have to completly restart the listing fron scratch.

If you establish a listing fee you will drive off dealers with large inventories.

Also limit repeated items to 2 or three per item per dealer so that the repeated stuff is greatly reduced on the site.

Less clutter will greatly help speed up the site and also make buyers happier with the site , which will equal more sales...

Still ... 50 Million items on any site is a remarkable feat! Before you try and reach 100 Million, let's improve the site and also upgrade the overall quality on the site.

I always wonder why starting fee is such a problem for many sellers.

When I started to sell on internett, way back in 1999, it felt absolutely normal to me to have to pay a little for the space I used when I was listing an item. For me, the use of space available in stead of handling everything myself, sounded as a perfect idea. To me, the alternative of running an auction site all by my own, was out of the question.

To use a starting fee, even if a very minor one, will keep uninteresting items out.. If a stamp has been printed in 700 billion copies, can be found in all kind of packages from national throug regional and world wide, have a minimum catalog value of 10 c, 1 krone or whatever - what's the use to offer it for 50 c or a dollar or even more at auction. Unless it is different - have a printing flaw, a superb (and unusual) cancel etc. And it's not only 1 you find, but hundreds, not to say thousands, of this kind of stamps. Everybody - seller, buyer and the Delcampe Team would be far better off it those stamps were off the listings.

To Delcampe it's no free game to offer us listing space. I would gladly pay for it if I knew it would help me to draw buyers to my items and it would create income to Delcampe for them to use to make the site better every day.

As it is now I will probably have to discontinue my Club Gold Membership - as I cannot operate a site where I put up my good stamps for selling and it all drowns in garbage.

Your ideas are excellent, and I hope they will receive some serious consideration.

I think if sellers have to re-list each item individually (rather than bulk-lister) after a period of time, and then are required to start the whole listing process all over after an extended period of time, we would soon see a lot of the :censored: disappear from the site. There would certainly be a lot more thought given by the worst offenders to actually what is worth listing.

Except for those who abuse the listing process now, it seems to me it would be a win-win-win situation. Buyers would definitely benefit, most sellers would benefit if the site is free of the junk so their listings could get more attention, and management would benefit from increased commissions if the buyers could access what they are looking for.

Lots of sensible suggestions, as usual.

I absolutely agree with you about limiting duplicates items - at one point Sebastien did state on the forum that duplicates were not allowed, but alas this is not clearly stated in the terms and conditions

As the site grows, I think it becomes essential that the t&c's get changed as and when something becomes an issue - as was indeed done re fake stamps a few months ago.

Personally I don't think it's the older listings that are the problem. Provided these simply get restarted, either through the automatic relist option, specified at the time of first listing or manually by the seller (as opposed to RELISTED), they keep the same item number and remain lower down in the searches/categories and I regularly come across old (2+ years) listings with bids on them.

What is a problem is a small number of very high volume sellers, which optimize the use of the lister/api software and relist as new sales 1000's of items a day. There are at least 2 postcard sellers with inventories of close to a million, who relist there stuff the maximum allowed 3 times a year - that is 8000+ items per seller per day. I tend to pay very little attention to stamps listings, but I expect that there are some sellers around who do exactly the same thing there. Maybe the permitted number of relists should be reduced to twice or even once a year.

I would hate to see a listing fee, but the thought has crossed my mind that a refundable listing fee would be a possibility - even if it's only 1c/1p per item, which would get refunded once the item sells. Everyone would get hit on the first month, but if you price your items sensibly and sell the stuff the refund would take care of a good part of the next month's listing fees. I am sure it would reduce the volume of lister/api regular relists, the number of duplicates and the ridiculously overpriced items that can currently be found.

Having said all that, I still enjoy selling, buying and working on the site and I'm here to stay.

I agree in that I think that it is not necessarily the old items that are the problem on the stamp site. ( I don't know about other categories as I rarely look at them).
I received a bid last week on an item which was in the very first batch I listed on this site in November 2010. the buyer also placed bids on a number of other items many of which I had recently listed.
The problem as I see it is the vast number of listings of the same issue (often overpriced) by the same seller on the grounds that, because they are used, they are different.
I also agree that I enjoy selling and occasionally buying on this site which remains an excellent, friendly site.

I too agree that it's not the length of time on the site but the sales potential that's important. Run of the mill items do sell but you may have to wait months or even years. I've only listed a handful of new items since Jan but sales in March/Apr/May were first listed -
Dec 09, Mar 10, 2 x Aug 10, Oct 10, Dec 10, 3 x Jan 11, Nov 11, Mar 12.

Initial interest in an item will be when it is first listed but without the ability to reset the counter it's not possible to see if there is ongoing interest. If the counter could be reset then you could judge if the item is still being viewed.

If an item hasn't sold then is there a market for it? Are there are a number of them on the site and they are being sold? If they are then there is a market for them but if you are offering at £5 but the others at £2 the chances are yours will never sell. You then need to decide if a sale at £2 is better than no sale at all.
