Please support me by asking as often as possible how I am getting on.

I have been a smoker of 20+ a day for over 30 years. There have been many failed attempts to quit over the years - often only lasting 2 or 3 days.

Last week Monday I started another attempt. Since then I've been down to 5 a day using "nicotine replacement therapy". Today we've travelled down to our holiday cottage and I've only had 3 ciggies today.

I'm hoping that the change of routine/scenery will help me to quit altogether, but I only have till next Sunday to achieve this.

C'mon - I went from 20-a-day to zero in one week because I had enough reason to do so - don't say "after this packet..." or anything, just do it NOW!

Keep one ciggie in a packet on the mantlepiece and laugh at it every time you walk past

Downside? Well for a long time your intake of pies and mints will go up, but everything soon starts to taste fresh and different and you soon reach the stage where you can't stand the smell of cigarette smoke; the first whiff of freshly-lit tobacco is divine, but a couple of minutes later - yeugh!

We're all rootin' for you

Agree with Xtf.

Keep it up - just stay away from anywhere where you may be tempted if you can.

Keep yourself occupied particularly at the main weakness moments - such as after a meal etc.

I think my dog never had so much excercise when i gave up from 40 to 60 a day to zero. When I got the really bad cravings I would hike off into the local fields and woods for hours at a time. And don't worry about the weight ballooning - that will come off with regular exercise once you have beaten the worst part of the craving. Look at each day you don't have a fag as a major success. Then will find the smokeless days will start to run into weeks - when you notice that you have beaten the worst of the cravings you have won.

Good luck.

It's more likely to be me who ends up there. We've taken down another holly and logged it. Guess who will be splitting and stacking the logs.

But so far so good - I haven't touched one yet this morning and we'll be off to the pub for lunch in a bit. That takes care of one of those "difficult times", because I won't be able to light one in there.

Good luck Mainly!

It must be so difficult to give it up if you have been smoking for years and especially if your partner smokes.

Why hasn't he given up as well, to give you support? It would not only be the comradely thing to do, but better for his health too....

Good on you anyway for trying again - I do hope you succeed as it doesn't make sense carrying on with something that is damaging your health.

Read the info on the packet, look at websites detailing what ciggies do to your lungs... anything to try and discourage you.....

We're rooting for you!

Old, He has cut down to about half of what he used to smoke, so he is heading in the right direction as well.

Bob, thanks for the encouraging words. One thing though: the pub is an excellent place to go - you're not allowed to smoke in pubs anymore.

I still haven't had one today, but found it very hard going after lunch.

Bob,

Yes, he's a smoker too, as stated earlier.

Now, can I really deprive the chancelor of all this tax revenue?!? :wink2: I suppose I can!

I have to confess though, that I had a smoke after my evening meal. :(

Hi there.

Well, I recommend every smoker who wants to stop smoking fast and smoothly to buy a box of this stuff instead of suffering and spending a lot of money on therapies and nicotine pill and gums.

If you are not grown up with this stuff it works fine. You´ll
probably even get nightmares about it so you will know you´re are done;
A real crash solution; quick and efficient.

P.S. Be aware that it might be illegal to import his stuff in your country;
so better check with the customs office first, if you dare to try it.

Thank you for your supportive message Sebastien.

I'm coping, but only just at times.

Tomorrow I'll spend 4 to 5 hours driving and I never smoke while driving, so that should be an "easy" period.

As Xtf said in an earlier message - now that I've come this far it can only get easier. Hopefully within the near future, I will be able to announce that I am "an ex-smoker".

My brother finally gave up by taking a more scientific approach and breaking the challenge into two parts - the smoking habit and the nicotine addiction.

First, he switched to nicotine patches and quickly weaned himself off the cigarettes. That dealt with the smoking "habit".

Deprived of the pleasure of smoking, he found it much easier to reduce his nicotine patch intake to zero. And he never smoked again!

Seems like a logical approach to me.

Well done. I was going to point out earlier that, given the price of a pack of ciggies now (and I've no idea what that is) you could quickly invest in a few bottles of nice wine, but we'd probably end up with a raging alcoholic instead!
