Thu, 23 Feb 2012

Dear members,

This week, we start of by diving into the final part of our retrospective of 2011. Visit the four corners of the world by having a look at all the shows we have attended this past year.

In the second part of the newsletter you will find the record sales and the statistics for this year as well as a new article in our press corner.

PS: Do not hesitate to react to this Newsletter and to participate in the Delcampe Community on the
Forum !

Erratum / Following the numerous reactions we received (which generally speaking were very positive) as a result of the adaptation of the Delcampe Terms and Conditions concerning fantasy labels, we would like to specify that we do not consider revenue stamps to be labels, fantasy labels or illegal issues. Moreover, most of the categorised countries on the websites have a seperate subcategory consecrated to revenue stamps (e.g. for the USA).

Our goal is to eliminate illegal stamps on the Delcampe website ( also known as "Bogus stamps").

We offer our sincere apologies to the collectors of revenue stamps, for this error in the wording.

Shows 2011 / This year we visited 15 shows all over the world ! Travelling from France to the United Kingdom via Germany, Italy, Monaco, the Czech Republic, the United States, Canada and China.
This gave us the possibility to meet hundreds of members who all have one thing in common: a true passion for collecting, be it in the domain of philately, numismatics, deltiology, or others.

A big thank you to all of the members who received us with open arms !

The international website (.net) and the English national websites (USA, Great Britain and Canada) received more than 10 million visits.

In 2011, on average, a Delcampe member spent between 6 and 10 minutes on the website each day.

In 2011, on Delcampe.net, the following happened :
  • 2 newly created sales each second,
  • an offer every 3 secondes,
  • a new visitor every 3 seconds,
  • a completed sale every 4 seconds !

We are counting on you to improve these numbers for 2012, together with us !

Adaptation of the Delcampe Terms and Conditions concerning fantasy labels (Cinderellas)
Mon, 13 Feb 2012

Dear members, dear philatelists,

We have taken an important ethical decision concerning the sale of certain labels without any postage value, printed by companies without any ties to postal administrations.

Currently, the sale of these fantasy labels (also known as "cinderellas" or "bogus stamps") is tolerated on our website
Delcampe.net, as long as their nature
is clearly mentioned in the title.

However, we would like to clear things up since many different types of labels exist, ranging from illegal issues to very collected, private, legal issues.

Fantasy labels are in fact labels which were not issued by postal authorities, contrary to postage stamps ! We have divided these labels into two categories :

1. The classic labels ( Exhibitions, promotion of tourism, charities, …),
2. Modern fantasy printings aimed at philatelists (especially topical stamp collectors).

It's the second category which we are interested in...This category is divided in the following subcategories:

2.1. Labels bearing the name of a place (country, region) which never existed.
2.2. Labels bearing the name of a place (country, region)
which exists or has existed, but has never issued postage stamps.
2.3.
Labels bearing the name of a place (country, region) which exists or has existed and issues or has issued postage stamps.

The most annoying thing about these labels is that :
  • They can be sold without the buyer knowing that they are in fact not postage stamps ;
  • They can go against the rights of people, countries, companies or organisations (illegal use of logos, country name, photographs, illustrations, …)

Adaptation of the Terms and Conditions

Here are the changes we foresee for the sale of these modern fantasy labels :
  • Labels infringing the rights of third parties are obviously prohibited on Delcampe.net. We are preparing a rights protection program for the website, which will take off in the future.
  • Other labels will be tolerated insofar as the seller clearly indicates the word "LABEL", in capital letters at the beginning of the title. The seller will also exclusively need to place his sale in the following category: "Stamps > Topics > Fantasy labels".

The Delcampe Terms and Conditions have been adapted and from now on they specify clearly what is forbidden, for example:
  • Labels bearing logos, illustrations, photographs belonging to third parties who have not given their approval ;
  • Labels which seem to have been issued, illegally, by an existing place (country or region), whether or not this place issues postage stamps.

We would like to make an appeal to our members who find  this project important. We are looking for member-moderators who might feel concerned by the presence of these labels on the website and who, thanks to their competence, moderation and good judgement would like to manage these fantasy labels by putting them into the appropriate category and removing any illegal labels from the website. Candidatures can be sent to info@delcampe.com.

We think that these changes will contribute to a healthier website for all of our members, whether they be in favour of fantasy labels or not (legal issues only !).

We thank you in advance and we wish you excellent sales and purchases (of stamps or labels) on Delcampe.net.

Your Delcampe.net Team

Our contests made a lot of collectors happy
...

We would also like to remind you that you can still participate in our three big contests by clicking on the following links :

IMPROVEMENT / For our sellers, we improved: My Delcampe > My information > Conditions of sale.

Up until now, when a seller checked a box under "Places" (e.g. Europe), a buyer, not belonging to this geographical zone, was not blocked by the system and could still submit an offer. Only the option "Seller's country", stopped a buyer from submitting an offer if he did not live in the same country as the seller.

From now on, if the seller has indicated a particular geographical zone to which he wishes to deliver his items and a seller not belonging to that particular geographical zone tries to submit an offer, he will be blocked by the system.

Attention :
not indicating any geographical zone means you accept to deliver items all over the world.
Therefore we advise our sellers to verify their Conditions of Sale in My Delcampe > My information > Conditions of sale.

IMPROVEMENT/ For the buyers, we improved the e-mail alert feature for items in the watching list.

From now on, the alert e-mails you receive for items in your watching list, will also contain the remarks you wrote underneath each item. Just as a reminder: the "remark" field can be found underneath each item in your watching list, which you can find in your favourites bar or in My Delcampe > My buying > Watching list.

SHOWS AGENDA / We would like to remind you that on February 22nd the new edition of Stampex will begin in London.
This show, held in the heart of London, takes place two times a year and is meeting place for philatelists.
For more information on this event, check the diary of events on our website.
